What is an ATS?

Updated: Oct 30, 2020

ATS or Applicant Tracking systems is a type of software that scans, sorts, and ranks applicants during a firm’s hiring process. ATS software allows for massive time saving as most of the applicants applying for a position nowadays will be turned down before their application has been seen by human eyes. This need not be a cause for concern as the focus of ATS is to remove completely unqualified individuals from the talent pool. Applicants thus must ensure that their application is ATS friendly.

Using some simple tricks and tools applicants use ATS to their advantage. To understand how one must understand how ATS works. The software scans all uploaded documents and searches them for a number of set criteria e.g. Skills, Keywords, etc…. Typical mistakes like spelling and grammar errors are instant red flags to both an ATS and an employee reading C.Vs.

By figuring out the keywords and valued skills an applicant can easily boost their chances to get past an ATS and land their dream job. Often in the job description, much of the key criteria will already be mentioned.

ValueHigher analyses all available documents to allow for the candidate to have the best chance of success. Our software will recommend jobs that are suitable for the candidate but also supply a list of improvements that the candidate can make upon their application.

Adapting your C.V to ATS should be considered very important, as in fact, recent studies suggest that up to 75% of recruiters are using some form of applicant tracking system. This means that not only are these systems widespread, but they have also been adopted because they work. Candidates should not be afraid of ATS but rather they should welcome it as a chance to get the job they deserve.

Candidates should use the ATS to demonstrate their value to a company before ever being in contact with a human recruiter. ValueHigher aims to make this process easier for applicants by making sure they have presented themselves in the best possible manner to the ATS and to the interviewers further down the line.
